Production of Jumbo Plugs
Holtex International Jumbo Plugs are produced from cuttings, tissue culture material or from small field grown divisions, depending on which is best for each variety. The material is planted into 3in cells in trays of 21, and grown on to allow the plants and root systems to develop.
When to choose Jumbo Plugs for your production
Jumbo Plugs are the best option for growers requiring high quality, uniform starting material for pot sizes above 1 gallon, or for quick turnaround of crops planted later in the spring. For example, overwintered 3in plugs of our Hosta series can be planted in March for filling 2-gallon pots in July the same year.
Jumbo 21 cell plugs are great for minimizing the amount of time a crop needs in your nursery. However, this means they need more time in ours, so it’s essential to order allowing sufficient time for us to produce these.

Ordering timeline
Production of Vernalized Jumbo Plugs starts in the spring of the year prior to delivery. We need your orders a full year ahead for delivery in week 8 of the following spring. The minimum order quantity is 126 (6 Trays) per variety.

Bare roots
Herbaceous perennials are defined by the fact that they die back to an underground root system to overwinter. These root systems bulk up over the years, and as they get bigger can be divided to produce new plants, which in turn can be grown on to increase their size.
